Salary: £31,500pa (pro-rata) including London-weighting

The International Broadcasting Trust (IBT) is recruiting a Digital Comms and Membership Officer to join its London team. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and fast-changing organisation that provides an important bridge between INGOs and the media.

IBT is a charity working to protect and expand spaces for international stories to be seen and heard by UK audiences. We are a membership-based organisation comprising 45 NGOs from across the international development and environmental sectors including Oxfam, WWF, Islamic Relief and British Red Cross. We support our members to forge lasting connections with media organisations, helping them to highlight and amplify key global issues.

The Digital Comms and Membership Officer role will suit someone with experience working across various areas of digital communications, a keen interest in the media and a passion for international development and environmental concerns. The location of the role is remote (home-based), however, because most of our members are headquartered in the capital, this role is best suited to London-based candidates.

 

Purpose of the role
  • To work with the Executive Director in planning and implementing the charity’s digital communications activities, building and strengthening the brand, promoting membership benefits, advancing advocacy aims and aiding income generation.
  • To be responsible for the management and development of IBT’s digital communications (including social media, newsletters and emails) in order to increase our influence, voice and membership.
  • To be responsible for maintaining and developing the charity’s website, ensuring the content is of high quality and meets the needs of our current and prospective members.
  • To lead the organisation and delivery of in-person/online events for members to engage with peers and key figures from broadcast and print media.
  • To maintain regular contact with representatives from the charity’s membership, and develop new networks of contacts within prospective members from INGOs.

 

Main duties

Digital Communications

  • To manage and develop the charity’s website, helping to ensure its content remains accessible, accurate, engaging and relevant to IBT’s members.
  • To manage and develop our online community and social media channels to increase audience engagement and
  • To analyse the charity’s web, email and social traffic; generating insights and developing a strategy to maximise the potential of IBT’s digital platforms.
  • To research, produce, plan and publish blog posts on a wide range of topical issues of particular importance to IBT’s members.

  • To oversee and develop the charity’s email communications to increase engagement and participation in the charity’s activities.
  • To manage and oversee the charity’s Digital Content
  • To design and produce print and digital marketing materials for the charity’s projects and events.
  • To document IBT activities through photography and video.
  • To proactively identify opportunities for new digital content or communications channels.

Membership

  • To plan, manage and promote regular events for the charity’s members.
  • To maintain and develop the charity’s relationships with its members and key contacts across the media.
  • To proactively maintain and review the charity’s membership contact database.
  • To document IBT’s live events (through photographs, videos, summary notes) and share outputs on the charity’s website.
  • To stay informed about the latest developments across the charity and media sectors, helping to guide IBT’s events and its digital content calendar.
  • To provide digital support for the charity’s members to access resources and membership services.

General

  • To work collaboratively with the Executive Director and other staff and to contribute to the organisational development and management of IBT.
  • To meet with the Executive Director for the purpose of regular supervision.
  • To comply with the charity’s health and safety, confidentiality, data protection and other policies.
  • To keep up-to-date on development and best practice in digital communications; within the charity sector generally.
  • To provide regular updates and reports to the Executive Director as required.
  • To undertake any other duties deemed appropriate by the Executive Director, subject to time and commensurate with level of responsibility and salary.

The Digital Comms and Membership Officer will have opportunities to develop additional skills and experience in various aspects of the charity’s work, including researching and writing reports and advocacy.

 

Person specification

It is not expected that the successful candidate will necessarily have experience/competency in all the areas highlighted.  IBT is committed to helping its staff to develop professionally and personally and all applications from suitably qualified candidates are encouraged.

Education, experience and knowledge

  • Proven experience in digital communications.
  • Experience of creating digital content appropriate for different platforms (websites, emails, social media).
  • Knowledge of the current social media and digital marketing landscape.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NGO sector and the role of digital communications.
  • Experience and understanding of website management and digital publishing.
  • Knowledge of website and social media analytics tools, including performance assessment.
  • Up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in online communications.

Skills and abilities

  • Excellent and engaging writing skills with meticulous attention to spelling, grammar and editorial style.
  • Ability to adapt writing styles for different audiences and platforms.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to produce engaging digital content across various formats (copy, images, graphics, emails, blogs).
  • Ability to produce high quality reports and analytics.
  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Office and website management software).
  • Responsive, flexible and proactive approach to work.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks, manage workload under pressure and work to deadlines.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Self-organising, independent, proactive and willing to take the initiative across various areas of the charity’s work.
  • Ability to work as part of a small team.
  • Ability to deal professionally with colleagues from across the non-profit and media sectors.
  • Multimedia production (photography, filmmaking, video editing, graphic design) skills are desirable but not essential to this role.
